Description:
Abstract:
This data set comprises individual time-series for ice crystals grown in an electrodynamic levitation diffusion chamber. Descriptions of the chamber and experiments can be found in Harrison et al. (2016). Experiments were conducted by freezing small (approximately 10 micrometer radius) droplets heterogeneously using the bionucleant Snomax. Frozen droplets were levitated in the diffusion chamber and grown in a constant temperature, pressure, and supersaturation environment. The voltage ratio needed to levitate the particle was recorded as a function of time and stored in the files archived here. The voltage ratio is identical to the mass ratio of the levitated particles, hence each time-series provides a measure of the mass of the growing particle. The initial size of the injected droplet was measured, and therefore the mass time-series can be calculated from the mass ratio time-series.
Supplemental_Information:
DATA FOR: Electrodynamic levitation diffusion chamber experiments on the growth of small ice crystals. The crystals were nucleated heterogeneously using the bionucleant Snomax, and the crystals were grown at temperatures ranging between -30 and -37C. Data includes a file (Conditions.txt) that provide the conditions for each experiment.

DESCRIPTION OF DATA FILES:

Conditions.txt: File containing the growth conditions for each experiment: Atmospheric pressure, temperature at the particle location, ice supersaturation at the particle location and uncertainty, initial radius of the frozen water droplet and uncertainty.

.dat files: Contain the raw data from each experiment. File naming convention is heticegrowth_date, where date is the date of the experiment (monthday, i.e. 712 is July 12). Appended to each date is a letter indicating a specific growth experiment done on that date. File columns are: absolute tracking program voltage modification number (0-4.096), Levitation Voltage , time (s), position (pixel), normalized mass or mass ratio (mass divided by the initial mass), mass (*10^9)
