Abstract:

This polygon feature class is a digital representation of physiographic provinces of Pennsylvania. It is a result of visual interpretation of the topography of Pennsylvania as illustrated by 20-feet countour intervalls on 1:50,000 scale county-size topographic maps. There has been no field investigation or aerial photograph interpretation involved in the production of this dataset. The feature class has the attribute field called "PHYSNO", which has been padded to 14 character length for all records.

Purpose:

This dataset provides a delineation of the currently accepted physiographic provinces of Pennsylvania. The information is to be used at a scale of 1:250,000 to 1:2,000,000. It is anticipated that this data set will be used for a variety of statewide and regional GIS applications, inlcuding ecosystem management, conservation and land use planning.

Process_Description:

The original maps were compiled on paper county topographic base maps. These maps were scanned, and the "controlpoints" method of georeferencing (affine transformation) was used in ArcInfo. Then the features were digitized and revised with the original paper compilation sheets. Polygon attributes consist of names of province, section, region, district and area. The unique number identifier was assigned to each landform, called "label", which consisted of 5-digit number with hyphens. Later it was transformed to the attribute "PHYSNO" with leading zeros (01 instead of 1, etc.), so that the identifying numbers would sort properly. The Unit_Level attribute indicates the highest level to which the author had named the units. Number "2" in that field indicates the polygon was attributed for Province and Section only, while a "5" indicates that the polygon was attributed from Province up to Area.The feature class consists of 550 unique units.
