Abstract:

Polygon shapefile that represents the Susquehanna River drainage basin.  This file was delineated in 2006 from two sources: (1) Susquehanna River Basin Commission hand drawn basin boundary appearing on hardcopy 1:24,000 USGS topographic maps and (2) the Smallsheds dataset from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP).  

The Pennsylvania portion of the drainage basin was taken largely from the smallsheds dataset.  The New York and Maryland portions were modified from the previous version of the SRB shapefile to match the SRBC hand drawn basin boundary from the USGS topo maps.

Purpose:

Dataset developed to fit the needs of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission and is intended for educational display purposes only.

This dataset was created by utilizing the Smallsheds from PADEP shapefile in the PA portion of the Basin whereas the New York and Maryland portions were visually verified from 1:24,000 scale topographic maps.  Please be aware that SRBC attempted to create seamless data across state lines.

The basin boundary in New York and Maryland was visually verified against USGS 1:24,000 scale topographic maps.  The northwest corner of the Pennsylvania portion was visually verified against USGS topo maps and with no changes needed, it was decided to use the Smallsheds form PADEP as the basin boundary in PA.

Original srb shapefile was modified in New York and Maryland at 1:24,000 scale to match SRBC's hand drawn Susquehanna River drainage basin which appears on hard copy 1:24,000 scale USGS topographic maps.  The hard copy maps were visually verified against the srb shapefile and changes were made where necessary both to the shapefile and the hard copy maps.  All changes to the shapefile were noted and printed.  Additionally, all changes to the hand drawn boundary were also noted beside the change on the hard copy map.

The Pennsylania portion of the original srb shapefile was taken from the smallsheds dataset from PADEP.  The Smallsheds dataset was dissolved into one polygon in order to obtain the basin boundary in PA.  This section of the basin boundary was verified against the SRBC's hard copy drainage basin.  Only very small discrepancies were found and it was decided to leave the Pennsylvania portion as is.
