Description:
Abstract:
This data set is a subset of the Shale Network database.

The Shale Network (http://www.shalenetwork.org/) is a project funded by the National Science Foundation to help scientists and citizens store data for water resources that may be affected by gas exploitation in shale in the U.S.A. Our primary focus currently is the northeastern U.S.A. We want to enable the generation of knowledge from water chemistry and flow data collected in areas of extraction of natural gas. The Shale Network is working with the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc. (CUAHSI) to create this database (http://data.cuahsi.org/). Our goal is to find, organize, and upload data for water resources for online publication with attribution. The Shale Network is seeking organizations engaged in water quality monitoring or research to join our effort. Please contact us if you wish to learn more about becoming part of the Shale Network.
Purpose:
The ShaleNetwork Mission: 1. identify groups, especially in PA, that are collecting water data in the region of extraction of natural gas from Marcellus and other shales 2. create a sustainable network among these groups by arranging an annual meeting to discuss and organize this data 3. work with the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc. (CUAHSI) to organize a water database that can be used to establish background concentrations and to assess impacts across extraction regions of the Marcellus and other shales 4. train students in database development and use for betterment of communities impacted by shale gas extraction 5. facilitate community groups in organizing, collecting, and interpreting water data 6. evaluate hydrogeochemical data using geographic information systems (GIS) that incorporate population and economic data in order to evaluate the potential for public health risk factors.
