Abstract:
This data set has been discussed in the following publication: “Wen, T., Liu, M., Woda, J., Zheng, G., Brantley, S., 2021. Detecting Anomalous Methane in Groundwater within Hydrocarbon Production Areas across the United States. Water Research.”. Parts of this dataset (i.e., groundwater chemistry in Pennsylvania) are a subset of the Shale Network database (https://doi.org/10.4211/his-data-shalenetwork). Colorado data were downloaded from COGCC website (https://cogcc.state.co.us/). Texas data were compiled from published literature (Darvari et al., 2017; Nicot et al., 2017a, 2017b, 2017c). New York data were derived from published work (Christian et al., 2016). Groundwater chemistry data from presumably impacted sites and Salt Spring were compiled from published literature (Llewellyn et al., 2015; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2015; Wen et al., 2019b; Woda et al., 2018).

The Shale Network (http://www.shalenetwork.org/) is a project funded by the National Science Foundation to help scientists and citizens store data for water resources that may be affected by gas exploitation in shale in the U.S.A. Our primary focus currently is the northeastern U.S.A. We want to enable the generation of knowledge from water chemistry and flow data collected in areas of extraction of natural gas. The Shale Network is working with the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc. (CUAHSI) to create this database (http://data.cuahsi.org/). Our goal is to find, organize, and upload data for water resources for online publication with attribution. The Shale Network is seeking organizations engaged in water quality monitoring or research to join our effort. Please contact us if you wish to learn more about becoming part of the Shale Network.
Purpose:
Compiled water quality data for groundwaters sampled by various organizations (e.g., consulting companies hired by oil and gas companies, academia) in hydrocarbon production regions in the states of Pennsylvania, New York, Colorado, and Texas. Further information is included in metadata in the dataset.
